TWIN CITIES - Does this sound like the latest talking head on the news channels, parsing the costs of the Obama healthcare plan?

The Obama administration has made some of statements about its intent to reform healthcare, but has offered few details of how it intends to complete this transformation... However, the barriers to EMR[Electronic Media Records} adoption are significant. First of all, estimates of costs for adopting EMR range from a few million to $60 million per hospital system. While the savings may be significant over time, it is still difficult for hospital systems, clinics or physicians to make the case for a capital investment during depressed economic times. The overall cost to implement EMR nationwide could easily dwarf the $19 billion earmark.

It's not, it's Lancet Software's Healthcare Practice Leader, Laura Madsen, writing her first article for healthcare business leaders and other readers of www.BeyeNETWORK.com. The instructive site is where Business Intelligence (BI), performance management, business integration, information quality, data warehousing and other subjects are routinely discussed for more than 250,000 readers.

Madsen was recently named BeyeNETWORK's Healthcare Channel Expert and will write an article every other month focusing on healthcare business challenges. Her articles will focus on how BI and data warehousing can strategically and tactically solve healthcare management and operations issues and enable organizations to effectively address the challenges they face.

NOW BLOGGING AT LANCETSOFTWARE.COM

Since February, Madsen also has been writing a regular BI blog for Lancet Software about related issues. Her topics have ranged from having a strong Data Governance program in place to assess return of BI investment to news about the recent TDWI (The Data Warehousing Institute) summit in Las Vegas. Also occasionally twittering at lbmadsen, Madsen will be sharing her 10-plus years of experience in the BI industry, where she has worked primarily in healthcare environments.

"My contributions to the BeyeNETWORK and on the Lancet blog will hopefully provide insights into why companies in all industries can benefit from a strong BI program, especially in the volatile economic environment that we're in today," Madsen says. "Making informed business decisions based on critical data points can dramatically improve the execution and performance levels throughout any organization, including healthcare."

About Business Needs and BI

According to the Gartner Group's 2008 CIO Technology profiles, BI adoption again ranked as the #1 priority (for three consecutive years now). And Aberdeen Group says that it expects BI will have the greatest impact on business over the next 2-5 years of the current technologies that companies might be considering.
